How to Apply for a diploma

The following items are mandatory:


Undergraduate degree recipients at all sites:

·         Download and print the Program Review of Studies for Graduation Form and Diploma/Commencement Application one semester before the last semester.

·         Consult current advisor for audit report to evaluate the degree plan for graduation eligibility. Student signature and academic advisor signature are required.

·         Upon graduation eligibility,submit the signed documents to Office of the Registrar.

·         Keep a copy for personal record.


Master's and doctoral degree recipients at all sites :


·         Download and print only the Diploma/Commencement Application.

·         Submit the application to current academic advisor.  

·         Keep a copy for personal record.


1.       Participants for spring commencement include:

·         Fall Semester graduates who complete requirements by Dec. 20, 2013 of the current academic year

·         Spring Semester graduates who complete requirements by May 2, 2014 of the current academic year

·         Summer Semester graduates who complete requirements by Aug. 18, 2014 of the current academic year


       2.       Access the Diploma/Commencement Application. Note: This application orders a diploma and registers student for the commencement ceremony.

       3.       Students apply for diploma one semester before last semester.

4.       Bachelor’s degree recipients only: Students must meet with their academic advisor to determine graduation eligibility.

5.       Master and doctorate degree recipients only: Submit the diploma/commencement application to your academic advisor.

6.       All students must fulfill their financial obligations with Student Accounts, including the $55 graduation processing fee, by contacting the Student Accounts office at 701-355-8082 or 800-288-6279, ext. 8082, or Graduation processing fee is billed with registration for ALU 499, ALU 799, and PTH 999.

7.       All diploma applications must be submitted to the Graduation Coordinator by April 1 to ensure inclusion of each student's name and degree for the commencement program and the press release for hometown publications.

8.       In the event your plans for attending commencement change, please notify the graduation coordinator at  immediately. The coordinator should also be notified of any change in your mailing address for diploma delivery.

9.       The diploma and unofficial transcript will be mailed after grades have been posted, the degree has been conferred by the registrar, and all financial obligations have been paid. For those not attending the ceremony, plaques and programs will also be mailed. Please allow 8 to 10 weeks for processing.

10.    The University of Mary does not keep copies of diplomas. Replacements or extra diplomas may be ordered for $25 by contacting    

11.    Graduation attire: This attire is strictly academic. Please refrain from any additional adornment.

12.    Purchasing graduation attire:


·         Graduation attire is student responsibility;

·         Gowns, caps, and tassels are all black for undergraduates and masters;

·         Master students must have an appropriate hood;

·         Doctoral gowns and hoods are provided by the University of Mary for the day. Tams with gold tassels are ordered by the graduation coordinator, but students are responsible for the purchase;

·         Attire and Nursing Pin Order Form;

·         On-line Announcement and Ring Orders;

·         Local Sites to Purchase Attire On Campus ;

2014 Baccalaureate and Commencement Overview

Baccalaureate has been observed for centuries as a way to recognize graduating students in a spiritual celebration. The University of Mary invites all students, their families and friends, faculty and staff to attend.

Attire:      Business casual

The University of Mary commencement is a joyous occasion, celebrated with music, inspirational messages and reflections, and degree recognition.

When:      Saturday, May 3, 2014

Where:    Bismarck Civic Center, 315 5th Street South (just north of Kirkwood Mall)

Time:       1:30 p.m. CST (approximately three hours in length)

Seating:   First come, first served

Additional Information About the Day of Commencement


Suggested attire: Even though students will be wearing gowns, business casual is recommended. Ceremony participants will also be standing for extended periods of time, so comfortable shoes are recommended.


Student Seating: The University of Mary strongly encourages all graduates to remain at their seats throughout the ceremony out of respect for fellow graduates and guests.

Name cards: In order to walk through the procession, it is mandatory that each student pick up his or her name card in the Linden Room at the Bismarck Civic Center the day of the ceremony.


Honors (undergraduate only):  Students who earn a GPA of 3.50 and higher by the end of seventh semester will be recognized at the commencement ceremony with an honor cord. Any changes in GPA after final grades have been posted will be reflected on the diploma and transcript. Honor cords will be available in the Linden Room of the Bismarck Civic Center the day of the ceremony.


Ample free parking is available near the Bismarck Civic Center:


·         Public parking is available in Civic Center Lots A, B, C, or D.

·         Handicap parking is available in Civic Center Lot B, at corner of 5 th Street & Bowen Ave.

·         Parking Lot E is reserved for faculty and honored guests


Concession stands: Civic Center concession stands will be open for your convenience throughout the day.


Professional photographs: Photographs will be taken for on-stage presentations: by Lifetouch, 1114 Main Ave, Fargo, ND 58103; 701-293-6356. After commencement, the photographer will contact students by the address provided on diploma application and by university webmail address. Please visit


Video and camera: Equipment cannot be set up in designated handicap-accessible seating area, per Civic Center Authority. Please advise family and friends.
